Cost Breakdown
As with most activities, there is a financial
commitment to studying martial arts. Below is a general list of
expenses you may encounter for the Raleigh class.
Activity/Item |
Description |
Cost |
Class fee |
Current |
$40/month for Raleigh residents. $52/month for others |
Gi |
This is the
traditional uniform worn by martial artists and can be ordered
through your instructor. If you wish to order it yourself, check
with the instructor first to make sure you order the correct
style. Children outgrow their gi and will periodically need new
ones. |
$35.00 |
Belt tests |
For belts yellow
through brown |
$60.00 each |
Black belt tests |
The Southeast
Region holds black belt tests every March at the Isle of
Palms/Charleston, SC. Students test in front of at least two of the four
Masters that are present. Although it is possible to drive to Charleston
for the day (4 hr trip), most students prefer to arrive the day
before. Students are responsible for making their own travel
arrangements. Estimated expense for travel (which includes hotel
room for one night, food, and gas) is $200.00. Keep in mind that
the test is divided into two parts and occur on two different
dates meaning that you will need to travel twice to Charleston
(alternatively, once to Augusta, GA and once to Charleston).
For 1st degree black = $270 + 10; 2nd degree black = 320 + 20; 3rd
degree black = 370 + 30; 4th degree black = 320 + 40 (periodically
these prices change, so always consult your instructor for the
latest fee) |

Various seminars
and workouts |
These range in cost
depending upon location and number of participants. |
$15.00 - $50.00 |
Tournament |
Registration fee is
ca. $50 (family rates are available). Tee shirts are usually
available for $20. Currently, we have one tournament every March
in Charleston, SC. See above for comments regarding travel
expenses to Charleston. It is strongly encouraged that you make it
to at least one tournament before you test for your black belt. |
$50.00 (see
description) |
Camp |
An annual Summer Camp is
held in Sterling, VA near Washington, DC. Ask the instructor for details |
